DC’s 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival

Every spring, the Washington metropolitan area transforms as the 1912 gift of cherry trees from Tokyo blossoms into a region-wide celebration. What began at the Tidal Basin has grown into the four-week National Cherry Blossom Festival, spanning Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. In 2026, the festival runs from March 20 through April 12, with peak bloom predicted for March 28–31. Throughout the season, residents and visitors can enjoy City in Bloom® installations, themed dining experiences, hotel packages, and special events across the DMV. To plan your visit, you can follow Bloom Watch for real-time updates on the blossoms’ progress.

The celebration begins with the Opening Ceremony on March 21, honoring the enduring friendship between Japan and the United States through performances that showcase traditional and contemporary Japanese arts. Festivities kick off even earlier with the Pink Tie Party on March 13 at Union Station, where guests don their best pink and floral attire to enjoy curated food, cocktails, and entertainment from top DC-area restaurants. On March 28, the Blossom Kite Festival fills the grounds of the Washington Monument with soaring kites, music, competitions, and family-friendly activities, including the high-energy Sakura Taiko Fest at the Sylvan Theatre.

April continues with Petalpalooza on April 4 along the banks of the Anacostia River, featuring live music, interactive art, family activities, and an evening fireworks show set to music. The season concludes on April 11 with the National Cherry Blossom Parade along Constitution Avenue, one of DC’s largest spectator events, complete with giant helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands, and celebrity performers.

Cherry blossom season is a reminder of why so many people choose to call the DMV home. Walkable neighborhoods, access to world-class events, and vibrant community traditions add tangible value to everyday life here. Whether you’re steps from Metro in Arlington, near the waterfront in Alexandria, or in a quiet Maryland suburb with an easy commute into the city, the blossoms are a shared regional experience that connects us all.

If you’re new to the area – or considering making a move – spring is one of the best times to explore different neighborhoods, attend local events, and envision what living in the DMV can offer year-round. The blossoms may only last a few weeks, but the lifestyle they represent is something residents enjoy every season.
